More women than men (67 percent of the country’s total female labour force versus 64 percent of the male labour force) work in the agriculture sector, most of whom are currently at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to accessing productive inputs such as land, labour (family or hired), fertilizer, improved seeds, labour-saving technology, and finance. If we can address access, affordability and meaningful usage and connectivity of technology and technological devices amongst this group, then we will have positioned Tanzanian Women in agriculture in a unique setting to explore the many opportunities in trade and the digital economy as they will be practicing sustainable agriculture.

Tanzania’s agriculture-centric economy, regenerative AI could be a game-changer. For instance, AI-driven agricultural apps can advise young farmers, especially women, on crop rotation and sustainable farming practices. These apps could analyze soil health, weather patterns, and crop yields, aiding in making informed, environmentally friendly farming decisions. A great example of this is the Agripoa app that uses AI to enable farmers to identify and treat poultry disease quickly and confidently.

Enhancing Healthcare Delivery through AI

AI’s potential in healthcare is immense, particularly in remote Tanzanian communities. An AI-driven telemedicine service could offer diagnostic assistance, especially in women’s health, bridging the gap in healthcare access. Such a platform could provide medical consultations and advice, making healthcare more accessible and efficient.

  • The ecosystem needs to come together and collaborate for Growth. Partnerships between the government, private sector, and NGOs can design programs that nurture AI innovations.
  • We also need to see more Community-Centric AI Projects. This will ensure AI projects are designed with local community needs at the forefront, thus ensuring relevance and sustainability.

Regenerative AI presents a unique opportunity for Tanzania, especially for its women and youth, to leapfrog into the digital economy. By integrating AI into various sectors like education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, healthcare, and environmental conservation, it can catalyze inclusive and sustainable development. However, harnessing its full potential requires an ecosystem that supports AI literacy, ethical practices, and collaborative efforts across different sectors.
